A tower, ledges stacked one above another, a run from wall to wall and a jump five floors up. Many people remember games like this from school computer labs and now look for something similar that works instantly, phones included. This guide explains how a tower climbing game works, how the score is counted and what it looks like in Skyhop. You can also play right now in your browser, with no download and no account.

How a tower climbing game works

A tower climbing game is a vertical platformer: you jump from ledge to ledge higher and higher while the screen scrolls up and does not wait for you. The winner is whoever climbs higher and chains longer combos, jumps that skip several floors at once.

The rules fit in three sentences. You run left and right, and the faster you run, the higher you jump. The side walls do not stop you, they bounce you back. Fall below the bottom of the screen and the run is over.

That is why one round lasts from under a minute to a few minutes, and every new run is a little better than the last. This rhythm is what makes the genre perfect for a short break.

Why so many people remember it

Tower jumping had everything a school computer lab needed: simple controls (arrow keys and Space), a round that fits into one break, and a high score everybody could see. Nobody read a manual. You watched someone pull off a long combo over their shoulder, then tried it yourself.

The second reason is the feeling of progress. A player who fell at floor 50 on day one would reach several hundred a few days later. Not thanks to upgrades, but thanks to technique: a running start, wall bounces and a feel for the rhythm. Skyhop keeps that rule. Free Climb has no in-run upgrades and no gear, so only your jumping counts.

Speed, walls and combos: the three rules

Speed is jump height. In Skyhop a standing jump takes you about two and a half floors up, a full-speed jump almost six. A high jump starts on the ground, so use the whole width of the ledge.

Walls bounce you. Hit a wall in the air and the hero flies the other way, keeping 92% of its horizontal speed. Hit the wall while still rising and the jump goes about 10% higher (once per jump, outside duels). Running into a wall on the ground is a mistake: you keep only about a third of your speed.

A combo is a chain of long jumps. Each jump in the chain must land at least 2 floors higher, and you have 3 seconds for the next one. Combo points are the total floors squared, divided by 10:

Floors in the combo Points
10 10
25 62
50 250
100 1000

So one 100-floor combo is worth more than ten 30-floor combos. For control details, read the guide to mobile controls: tilt or swipe.

What it looks like in Skyhop

Skyhop keeps the best of classic tower climbing and adds modes for different amounts of time:

Mode What you do How long
Free Climb an endless tower, a new world every 100 floors, the Top of the World at floor 10,000 one to fifteen minutes
Daily Tower the same tower for everyone for one day, with a daily leaderboard a few minutes
Adventure 100 worlds and 1,396 short levels with stars 1–2 minutes per level
Duel 90 seconds against another player's ghost 90 seconds
Room with friends up to 10 players, a 3-minute race or the Daily Tower together 3 minutes

Free Climb is the closest to the classic: a plain tower up to floor 1,000 with a wider ledge every 100 floors, then zones with their own rules.

On a phone and on a computer

The old tower games were desktop only. Skyhop runs in the browser on both:

  • Phone: hold your finger on the screen and the hero jumps on its own. The default Guide mode works like a touchpad: the hero follows a dot under your thumb and stops without sliding. Swipe, Tilt and Buttons are also available.
  • Computer: arrow keys and Space, just like back then. Holding Space auto-jumps too.

You can also add Skyhop to your phone's home screen so it opens full screen like an app and works offline after the first launch.

What is new compared with the old games

  • A shared daily tower. Everyone plays the same ledge layout on the same day, so scores compare fairly.
  • Ghosts instead of a high score table. In duels and the Daily Tower a see-through hero shows how a rival, or you in your best run, actually jumped.
  • Rooms with friends. A whole class can climb the same tower at once: a code or a link, up to 10 players, nothing to install. See the guide to playing with friends in your browser.
  • Saved progress. You play as a guest and progress saves on your device. An account helps when you want to play on several devices.

How to start: your first five minutes

  1. Go to skyhop.pl/en/ and tap Play now. The first level starts right away.
  2. Hold your finger or Space and do not tap to the beat; the hero jumps on its own.
  3. For the first minute, practise only the run-up: from one edge of a ledge to the other, then jump.
  4. Then look for walls: jump just before a wall so you bounce off it while still rising.
  5. Finally, try to link three long jumps into one combo.

After five minutes you will climb higher than in your first run, and from there it is just practice. Play now, no sign-up.

Questions and answers

What is the game where you jump up a tower floor by floor called?

The genre is a vertical platformer, often called a tower climbing or tower jumping game. You jump from ledge to ledge higher and higher, and you score for height and for combos.

Can I play a tower climbing game in my browser today?

Yes. Skyhop is a tower climbing game that is free and runs in the browser on phones and computers. There is nothing to download and no account to create.

How does scoring work in a tower jumping game?

You score for height and for combos, which are chains of jumps of at least 2 floors. In Skyhop a combo is worth the floors squared divided by 10, so one long combo beats several short ones.

Does a tower climbing game work on a phone?

Yes. In Skyhop you hold your finger on the screen and the hero jumps on its own, so your thumb only steers. On a computer you use the arrow keys and Space.
